Steel is a very recyclable product which has made it even more popular in this age of green thinking. Homes are being produced using steel structural materials rather than wood because the wood is not as recyclable and produces more waste products. Steel is much better suited for the job because of its resistant qualities. Bugs won?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t bother it and it can stand up to higher heat than wood. Each year, North America recycles more steel than all of the different combined plastics. Americans use approximately one hundred million steel cans every day and these cans contain between twenty five percent and one hundred percent recycled steel product.
The steel industry is one of the original recyclers; they have been doing it for over 150 years. In fact, the largest source of raw material for the current steel industry consists of scrap metal. This is commonly collected by recycling steel products. The industry can save money and time by recycling steel, basically seventy five percent savings, which would save enough energy to power eighteen million homes.
Currently, over sixty five percent of the steel that is produced in the United States is recycled into new steel products every year. One ton of recycled steel can save approximately 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone. An interesting fact is that a steel frame for a two thousand square foot two story house is equivalent in material usage to about six recycled cars. A comparable structure from wood takes approximately forty trees to create. Typically, a new household appliance is created using sixty-five percent steel, much of that having been recycled. Because steel is infinitely recyclable, it lends itself to a large multitude of different applications and as time goes on, the applications are only likely to continue increasing in number.
