Drop-bottom bins solve a specific problem on production lines: getting contents out fast without lifting or tipping the whole bin. Here’s what to look at when sizing one.

How the Drop-Bottom Mechanism Works

These bins are typically fabricated with steel corrugated sides. One end of the floor is hinged so that when a tow motor lifts the bin — placing the forks under steel protrusions on the upper sides — the unhinged end of the floor falls open toward the ground. Contents empty out through the opened floor directly to the desired station on the line.

4-Way vs. 2-Way Entry

Depending on the model, these bins accept forklift forks from all four sides (4-way entry) or only two opposing sides (2-way entry). 4-way entry gives more flexibility in tight production layouts where the bin can’t always be approached from the same direction.

Stacking Limits

These bins are stackable, but how many can be safely stacked when full depends on the strength of the structure — heavier-duty construction generally supports greater stack height. Don’t assume two bins of similar outer dimensions have the same safe stacking limit.

Dual-Use as a Solid Bin

The drop-bottom feature doesn’t have to be used. These bins work perfectly well as standard solid steel bins, as long as they’re only ever lifted from the bottom by forklift rather than by the drop-floor mechanism.
