Wire Mesh Basket Sizes & Load Capacity: A Buyer’s Guide

July 14, 2026 /Posted byRDR Steel Sales / 18

Wire mesh baskets look simple, but sizing one correctly involves a few things that aren’t obvious from a quick look: mesh opening size, wire gauge, and how the floor is built all affect what a basket can actually hold.

Mesh Opening Size

Mesh openings are typically sized 2″ x 1″ or 2″ x 2″, measured centre to centre, though expanded metal is also used on some baskets. The right opening size depends on what you’re storing — openings need to be small enough that product doesn’t work its way through the sides or floor, but no smaller than necessary, since finer mesh adds weight and cost without adding capacity.

Wire Gauge and Strength

The thickness of the wire used in the mesh determines how much abuse the sides and floor can take. Thicker wire resists denting and puncturing better during normal handling and loading — a meaningful factor if the basket will see repeated forklift work over its life.

Floor Construction and Capacity

Holding capacity comes down to the floor more than the sides. More cross members in the floor base add strength, and the gauge of the structural tubing used in the frame determines overall durability and rated capacity. Two baskets that look identical from the outside can have very different weight ratings depending on floor construction.

Collapsible Sides

Many wire mesh baskets are built with sides that collapse flat. This saves storage space when baskets aren’t in use and lets more empty baskets return per truckload — worth considering if you’re cycling baskets back and forth between facilities regularly.

Sizing for Efficient Trailer Loading

If baskets are shipping regularly, dimensions matter for trailer space, not just storage. A common width is 48 inches, which allows two baskets side by side across a standard 53-foot trailer (trailer widths typically run 99–102 inches). Some baskets run 30–33 inches wide instead, allowing three across. Basket height affects how many rows can stack, and overall load weight is limited by the trailer’s axle configuration — worth checking with your carrier before finalizing an order size. If you’re shipping across the Canada–US border, see Shipping Across the Canada–US Border for freight and tariff basics — the same freight considerations apply to baskets as bins.
